Every last Thursday of each month, Alberta St. turns into a public art show with booths that line the street from NE 14th to NE 31st. You might see some DJ’s on the corner sidewalk shaking beats well into the night, maybe even a few fire walkers, street performers or the March Fourth marching band throwing down great grooves for all to enjoy.

View Alameda homes for sale on Portland neighborhood map
The Alameda neighborhood located in Northeast Portland was established on the 1859 land claim of William C. Bowering and his wife, Isabelle. It is an established tree-lined neighborhood with old homes and a strong knit community. Alameda borders Alberta Arts to its north and Irvington and Grant Park to its south.
In 1909, the Alameda Land Company laid out the Alameda Park subdivision that was then annexed to the city of Portland. The name comes from the Spanish word “alamo,” meaning a poplar or cottonwood tree. “Alameda” means, precisely, a public walk or promenade lined with poplar trees, and, by extension, a street lined with trees. Like the English word for a “parkway.”
Parts of Alameda have amazing views from the non-parallel streets that over-look the mountains river and downtown Portland. Alameda Elementary school has excellent parent reviews and great overall school ratings to make this a great location to move the family and kids too. The Alameda brewing Co. and the Alameda Cafe are a couple of popular spots in the neighborhood. The average home price in Alameda is $570,000 and the average year built was 1925.

Saburo’s Sushi bar and Restaurant – Japanese Sushi House
Post # 5 of 101 Cool Portland Places: Saburo’s Sushi bar
Saburo’s sushi in Southeast Portland in the Sellwood neighborhood.
Saburo’s Japanese Sushi House is by far my favorite sushi bar in all of Portland. The pieces are so huge that you might need a knife to cut it into smaller pieces, and yet you still pay the same price as any other place. The food tastes very fresh and the service is nice. My favorite is the fresh water eel and the Sabu Roll. The Salmon pieces are so huge that you cannot even see the rice. They of course have all of the tempura and Teriyaki meals you could ever want.
You will not be disappointed, check out Saburos in Sellwood at 1667 SE Bybee Blvd Portland.
The only drawback to some is the long wait to get inside. Rain or shine you can expect to wait half hour to an hour and a half. This place has become popular by word of mouth for a reason. In my opinion, I do not mind the wait, it gives me a good reason to go next door and get a good beer while waiting.

The Kennedy School – Portland Entertainment
Welcome to the Kennedy School, located in the Northeast Portland Concordia neighborhood. McMenamins has renovated the once-abandoned scholastic gem and turned it into one Portland’s favorite hot spots among locals and out of state visitors.
Originally opened in 1915 as an elementary school, now Inside you will find everything from the old school auditorium turned into a movie theater with couches and tables to eat your home made pizza, to the detention hall turned into a whiskey and cigar room. The cafeteria now houses a fine eating establishment with a great menu and several home made beers on tap and a gift shop to pick up some great memories. A huge 20 person hot tub soaking pool and and an extra large conference room now hosts great live local and out of state performers of all types. The classrooms are turned into guest rooms with original chalkboards and cloakrooms, private baths, telephones and modems. Amazing artwork lines the walls, much of it dates back from the early years of The Kennedy Schools existence.
I love the scene and the good energy the school has. This is truly a must see experience to enjoy if you have yet to visit. The Kennedy is located at: 5736 N.E. 33rd Ave. Portland, OR 97211
#9 -The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) – Abernethy neighborhood fun
Post #9 of 101 Cool Portland Places: OMSI
The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), in SE Portland in the Abernathy neighborhood, has always been an exciting afternoon adventure. I walk in knowing there’s something new and interesting I will be walking out with. It boasts something for everyone making it a great spot for a family activity in Portland. I remember seeing a planetarium show with vibrant looking planets and galaxy’s to dream into. There’s Orion’s Belt with a nebula at the end of his sword. OMSI is home to one of the most technologically advanced planetariums in the Northwest and also happens to have a U.S. Navy submarine. Sweet.

The museum traces its roots back to the Oregon Museum of History, Science, and Industry which was started in 1944 in the Portland Hotel. OMSI moved to its current site which was donated by Portland General Electric in 1992. The museum features numerous halls that focus on specific areas of science. The Turbine Hall features exhibits on space travel, engineering, physics, and chemistry while the Life Sciences Hall focuses on biology. The Science Playground is designed for families with children under the age of six. It gives children the chance to explore a variety of areas while keeping them safe and contained in an area where parents can keep an eye on them.
In addition to exhibits, the Museum offers several educational programs including the largest science outreach program in the U.S. They teach innovative science education in Western states as well as offer all day and overnight science classes during Spring and Summer Break. OMSI is open Tuesday through Sunday and Mondays when schools are closed from 9:30 am to 5:30pm. Ticket prices are $11 for adults and $9 for seniors and those under 13, admission is free for members. Back in the 1930s, you could gaze eastward from downtown Portland and spot the huge, flickering sign at the opulent Hollywood Theater all the way out on Northeast Sandy Boulevard. Now that sign still flickers thanks to a $30,000 grant given to restore that sign. Some nice shops/restaurants to visit are The Rheinlander German Restaurant, Pal’s Shanty tavern, Tony Starlights Jazz music and Food, Fleur de Lis Bakery and Café, Hama Sushi, Hollywood Trader Joes, Bluefin Sushi Bar, and my favorite The Laurelwood Pizza and pub.
