Maplewood Elementary School – Rated “exceptional” by Oregon State

Maplewood Elementary School in the Portland School District, located in the Maplewood Neighborhood emphasizes a well rounded education for its K-5 students. The school was rated “exceptional” by Oregon State. In addition to the the standard curriculum Maplewood offers classes in language, art, technology and classes that focus on multicultural ideas. Older students are paired with younger students in the Reading Buddies Program as well as peer tutoring. Students learn leadership skills by serving as Conflict Managers and on the Student council. The Wild Woods outdoor education area helps teach students about biology and eco-friendly science. Other features include an Artist in residence program as well as a Nike sponsored PE2Go program. The school boasts a large music program featuring band, orchestra, strings, and choir. The school offers an Art4Life before and after school program that focuses on art appreciation. Other after school programs include Chess Club, Mad Science, Masterpiece Art and Young Players Theater.

Parents of Maplewood students appreciate the individual attention their children receive as well as the dedicated nature of the community. As reviewers on greatschools.net the parents rated the school 4/5 and overall the school was rated 9/10. The school uses a parent volunteer coordinator to match involved parents with tasks based on their unique skills and interests .
