Richmond Japanese Immersion School dives into the culture of Japan

Richmond Japanese Immersion School in the Portland School District an located in the Richmond Neighborhood it caters to PK-5 students and as the name implies allows them to immerse themselves in the culture of Japan. The material covered at the school is mostly the same as at other schools, half of the content is simply taught in Japanese instead of English. The language language curriculum helps students develop their fluency with oral and written language as well as Cultural insight. This culminates in the 5th grade with a trip to Japan.

The immersion program is in its 8th year and since then Richmond has won numerous awards including the 2005 award for “Excellence in International Education” given by the Goldman Sachs Foundation and the Asia Society. It has also been rated as “excellent” by the Oregon Education Department for its outstanding academic achievement. The school offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities including before and after school care, kendo, karate, and the MUSE band program. The immersion program continues throughout Mt. Tabor Middle School and Grant High School.
