Sellwood Middle School, Focus’s intensely on writing throughout curriculum

Sellwood Middle School in the Portland School District located in the Sellwood Moreland Neighborhood, promotes a special interest in writing for its 6-8th grade students. The school focuses intensely on writing throughout out their curriculum. This includes writing oriented projects that are also designed to teach time management skills. Sellwood offers both Algebra and Geometry classes that can be taken for college credit as well as Spanish classes that prepare students to enter into the International Baccalaureate Program available at Cleveland High School and Lincoln High School. The school run on a trimester schedule with students beginning new classes every 12 weeks. Elective courses include yearbook and an award winning jazz band as well as a marimba,band. After school activities include dance team, yoga, basketball and drama. Sellwood features a mixed-age homeroom that each student is assigned to for the entire time they attend the school, with the goal of fostering a sense of community among students.

Parental involvement is a key aspect of the Sellwood community. The parents routinely raise money for murals, assemblies, and field trips which help integrate art with curriculum. Parents appreciate how safe the school feels and students appreciate the quality of the extracurricular activities.
