Hosford-Abernathy neighborhood, Inner Southeast Portland charm
The Hosford-Abernathy neighborhood is in close-in Portland and located inner Southeast Portland in the 97214 and 97202 zipcode. It borders the Willamette River to the west as well as the Hawthorne, Buckman and Ladd’s Addition neighborhoods.
The name Hosford-Abernathy is derived from two schools which are located within the neighborhood. Hosford Middle School, on Southeast 28th Place is named after Methodist minister Chauncey O. Hosford a onetime resident of Portland who owned 200 acres of land on Mt. Tabor, and Abernathy ElementarySchool is located on Southeast Orange Avenue, near Division Street. George Abernathy, like Hosford a Methodist missionary, was also Oregon’s first provincial governor.
The Hosford-Abernathy neighborhood offers an eclectic mix of residential, commercial, and industrial activity. Beautiful single family residents such as Victorian, Old-PDX, Craftman-style and Bungalows can be seen throughout Abernathy with gorgeous landscapes. Throughout the neighborhood homeowners are renovating and remodeling their homes, often in a manner that restores their original character. The Clinton area with its many new shops, retauruants, bars and movie theater has that exciting up-and coming feel that has many people wanting to move into this neighborhood. Clinton Corner Cafe, Vindalho, the Night Lite lounge, The Clinton Movie Theather. Local Abernethy markets are New Seasons off of SE Division and 21th as well as the People’s Co-Op. I have been living off of my Organic fruit and vegetable garden for the last 25 years. I don\'t go produce shopping for 8 months of the year. I also have some of the most healthiest and happiest chickens from which I get fresh eggs daily.
