Rieke Elementary – a designated Oregon Green School
Rieke Elementary, part of the Portland School District in the Hillsdale Neighborhood, focuses on instilling environmental awareness in its students. As a designated Oregon Green School it teaches students to learn to protect the environment by reusing and reducing waste. In addition the students routinely practice community service that ties in with the core subjects such as reading and writing. This K-5 school tries to create well balanced students who respect themselves and others. The school’s teaching style is child centered and places emphasis on achieving social, emotional, intellectual and creative potential. Reike offers several opportunities for group interaction including Reading and Math Buddies that pair older and younger students together. It also offers band and string instrumental music programs, foreign language programs, Mad Science and an award winning Chess Club. In addition before and after school care is offered on site through Vermont Hills Family Life Center and off site through Fulton Park Community Center and Portland Jewish Academy. Both a TAG program and a special needs class are also available
The Rieke community is very active both in PTA and community activities, a huge plus as far as the reviewers on greatschools.net were concerned, they gave the school 5/5. The site also gave the the school an overall rating of 9/10. In my spare time I enjoy watching my beautiful boy grow, camping where you can\'t see civilization, giving star talks under a clear night sky, The White Album, brewing my own organic blueberry wine and Organic gardening. I have been living off of my Organic fruit and vegetable garden for the last 25 years. I don\'t go produce shopping for 8 months of the year. I also have some of the most healthiest and happiest chickens from which I get fresh eggs daily.
