Da Vinci Arts Middle School – Focused in the arts and music

Da Vinci Arts Middle School  in the Portland School District is located in the Kerns neighborhood. Students who are not highly focused in the arts will certainly feel out of place with classes ranging from Jazz Ensemble to Fused Glass. The school’s curriculum is heavily influenced by the arts but that in no way diminishes its academic performance. Da Vinci earned an “exceptional” overall rating on its 06-07 Portland education state report card. It also offers advanced courses academic courses such as high school level geometry. Also offered are boys and girls volleyball and basketball, a rock climbing club as well as a book group. Another unique feature of the school are its mixed-age classes. Students of all grade levels interact which allows older students to mentor those just entering the program.

Da Vinci was founded in 1996 by parents and they continue to be a primary motivating force for the school. Several reviewers on Great Schools rave about the parental involvement the school receives and the sense of community it fosters. Students themselves have nothing but good things to say about the the welcoming atmosphere as well. Overall greatschools.net rated it 9/10 and parents gave it 5/5. Those thinking of relocating to Portland need to be aware that students need to find their own transportation to and from school which is located at 2508 NE Everett in Portland in the Kerns neighborhood.
