Portland’s commitment to foreign language learning is clear at Hosford Middle School in the Portland School District where Spanish and Mandarin Chinese immersion programs are a main attraction. Both programs are designed to offer the opportunity for students to achieve advanced language placement in high school and highlight Portland’s international community link. Hosford Middle School believes that all students learn differently and need to be engaged, and has created a program for its students that encourages creativity, service and exploration to reach that goal. All classes are mixed grade structure, except social studies, which allows students to work at their own level.
Hosford offers an array of classes aimed at both advanced students and those needing special attention. High school level algebra and geometry classes are offered in addition to Connected Math, College Prep Math, Talented and Gifted (TAG) coursework, ESL, and special needs classes.
Hosford Middle School was nominated for National Title I School of the Year Award in 2007 for exceptional test scores two years running. Electives include PE, band, concert band, symphonic band, jazz band, Strings, art, ceramics, computers, drama and LegoTech.
