Sunnyside Environmental School – Portland’s alternative education

Sunnyside Environmental School located in the Sunnyside neighborhood sits in the Hawthorne district in the Portland School District. It is a K-8 public school with a unique approach to learning that illustrates Portland’s alternative education approach. Using the cornerstones of creativity, love of learning, personal responsibility and family, the school explores and works in the community to sculpt an academically rigorous education.

The multicultural K-8 school is heavily art-infused and explores wild and urban areas, and participates in many community activities, including Reading Buddies, service-learning experiences with the elderly and homeless, Adopt a Park Program, and curriculum-based camping trips.

Spanish language courses are mandatory and there is a school garden and compost bins to promote sustainability and recycling. Algebra courses are required as well and geometry is available for advanced students.

After school activities include theater, musical, a marimba band, a garage band, and choir.

Parents rave about the school, but note that though it is a public school, there are many field trips that require additional fees on a weekly basis.
