Intel Oregon, the largest Intel site, employees over 15,000 people, which makes it the non-government employer in Oregon. Intel is located in Hillsboro in the Orenco Sunset neighborhood. With numerous sites in Washington County, the company is responsible for countless people relocating to Portland Oregon and surrounding cities; as such, the company has a large stake in the community and shows it through numerous public outreach programs. Over the past 10 years Intel has donated over 1 billion dollars and its employees have given 2 million man hours to improving education around the world.
Intel is the world’s largest semiconductor company, credited with the invention of the processor that is found in most personal computers today. The Oregon site, founded in 1974, is the largest and most comprehensive semiconductor research and manufacturing in the world. The site is dedicated to minimizing its impact, going as far as to offset its off-site travel impacts through commute reduction efforts and additional programs. Intel Oregon offers numerous educational programs that can be found throughout the Portland School District including the Lego robotics program which allows students to create their own robots in competition against other schools. The company also sponsors the Schools of Distinction Awards which honors schools that have demonstrated an excellence in math and science education; as well as, the Intel Science Talent Search, the most prestigious pre-college science competition in the country which awards over 1 million dollars in scholarships annually.
