Portland State University, PSU – Downtown Portland College
Portland State University, located in the heart of Downtown Portland, it has the largest enrollment of any school in the state. Founded in 1946, the university is party of the Oregon University system and operates not under the traditional undergraduate system but rather under a more interdisciplinary general education system called University Studies. During the past year PSU has awarded over 4000 Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate degrees in a wide variety of majors. As such it is home to thousands of students relocating to Portland Oregon every year.
In addition to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Fine and Preforming Arts, and the School of Business Administration, PSU is home to a number of more specialized Schools and Colleges. The Graduate School of Education offers further study for those in the field of education in an urban setting with a diverse community.
The College of Urban and Public Affairs uses PSU’s downtown location to its advantage, and allows its students plenty of opportunity to interact with community organizations. Students impact the community by tackling community problems in real time and learning from the results. Community leaders from elected officials to notable real estate professionals teach in class as well so students understand what it takes to become a civic leader.
The Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science takes advantage of its proximity to The Silicon Forest to give students the opportunity to access technology oriented companies like Intel Oregon, the headquarters of which is located in nearby Hillsboro. Over 90 percent of Maseech students pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam while most schools in the country boast 80 percent. As such, the college has become a leading supplier of jobs in Portland to companies like Intel, Nike, Tektronix .
The School of Social Work is one of the best of its kind in the nation. The nationally renowned staff helps students to attain degrees of all levels and is the only school in the state to provide Masters and PhD of Social Work Programs . Like many of the Schools at PSU it places a strong focus on community involvement with ongoing research to improve services in understaffed areas. Bachelor Degrees are given in Child and Family Studies as well as Social Work. A Masters is given in Social Work, and a Ph.D is given in Social Work and Social Research.
