Markham Elementary – Students speak over 15 different languages

Markham Elementary, located in the Portland School District, in the West Portland Park neighborhood focuses on a well rounded education that emphasizes the multicultural nature of the students. This K-5 school boasts students that speak over 15 different languages which provides the teachers plenty of opportunity to teach students how to be citizens of the world. This is complimented by the Spanish language instruction that takes place in many classrooms. The school’s team based environment uses a variety of learning styles to teach students reading, math, and writing while building their analytical skills. Markham has a computer lab as well as internet access in the classrooms. Its library is home to over 12,000 books many of which reflect its multicultural nature. It offers the TAG program as well as providing for students with special needs. The school offers ESL and is part of Portland’s Title 1 program. Markham offers before and after school care through its PTA. The school was granted SUN status in 2004 which gives it access to a Portland after school program that offers a wide array of classes as well as academic assistance to struggling students.

Greatschools.net, home to ratings and Portland school reviews gave Markham Elementary 5/10. Some of the parents of students who reviewed the school felt that the teachers go above and beyond to understand the students. They also appreciated the balance the school strikes between learning and fun as well as their excellent reading program. Overall, parents rated the school 3/5.
