Driving up and down the streets I am always amazed at how much creativity and artistic expression I always see. Whether it is on Hawthorne Blvd including all of the different varieties of eateries, pubs, books, cafes, theaters, vintage…. or from the styles, landscapes and paint colors that flourish each home. Portland has always been known for diverse eclectic people, but the Hawthorne neighborhood seems attract much of it.

Inner SE Portland has always had a special place in my heart, for my first 5 years here I was in the Kerns neighborhood which borders Hawthorne. The Goodfoot, The Bonfire, Laurelhurst movie theater, Holmans, Beulahland, Whole foods… many great spots. But If were to list all of the hot spots in Hawthorne, this list would be 4 paragraphs long.
Let’s talk about the Real Estate. The homes, the homes, the homes……click to view
Portland Homes for sale in the Hawthorne neighborhood . So many awesome homes that are affordable and in great locations. As a Portland Realtor, I have the honor to enter into many of these homes, and what I see is floor plans that are great, backyards that are dreamy and friendly neighbors that are inviting me over while previewing homes. Home prices ranging from the mid$200k up to the high $600k. Everything is walking distance and the transit system is excellent.
Yes, I love this neighborhood. I would invite you to learn more about it by strolling around from SE 20th – 50th and from around Division to Stark.

Viewing homes for sale in Portland:
As a licensed Portland Oregon Realtor I was showing homes a few days ago to an out-of-state family from Ohio. We came into one of the most amazing homes I’ve seen in a while. We were looking at Portland homes for sale in inner SE area of Westmoreland/Sellwood. You can click on the link to view Westmoreland/Sellwood homes for sale. The neighborhood we viewed was near Reed College, and while driving up to this home, the first thing I noticed was a peaceful quite tree-lined street and a kids lemonade stand on the corner ( why didn’t I get a cup). I looked at the MLS listing and for a 4 bedroom 3 bathroom home, with over 3000 Sq. Ft, in a beautifully highly sought after neighborhood, the home was priced around the $400,000 range but could of easily gone for over $500k in a solid housing market. The front yard had a grape vine trellis with sweet as pie grapes and underneath was a hand carved wooden bench and marble table that is perfect for reading or relaxing. A stone pathway let to the front door, the perfect front yard.
We entered the home
As we entered, it felt like this grand lofty style of living that made me instantly want to kick off my shoes and relax on the couch. If I wasn’t a Portland Realtor, I might of just done that. The gourmet kitchen flowed seamlessly into the dining room and it had a chef’s delight island in the middle with everything you can imagine on it to make cooking a breeze. The pantry was huge and the kitchen had the most perfect little eating nook. We continued our walk…The master bedroom was on the main level and it had a bathroom that was like a luxury day spa and french doors that led to the backyard wooden deck patio with a hot tub in the corner. We walked in the backyard and it had every mature fruit tree you can imagine. Tons of ripe and tasty fruit just hanging there waiting for me to sample a bit of everything. Yes, I had a peach!
The bedrooms upstairs were spacious with tall ceilings and large walk in closets that can fit everything you own. The molding on the ceilings were delightful and every window had the new energy efficient double paned windows. The basement level had a separate entrance as well as a second kitchen, bedroom and bathroom so when you have out of town guests, they can literally have their own apartment without feeling like they are in the way, or…the perfect mother-in-law quarters. My clients and I new that this home was going to sell fast, and sure enough, it had an accepted offer within a week of being on the market. Below is not a picture of that Portland home for sale, but this one does look nice to share.

Boedeck Cellars in Northwest Portland
Boedeck Cellars is located Northwest Portland in the NW Industrial area was established in 2003 with the idea of creating small-production, food-oriented Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from some of Oregon’s greatest vineyards. The small scale allows for more individual attention per lot and is part of the reason that many of their products sell out rather quickly.
Owners Stewart Boedecker and Athena Pappas only create wine that they love, which means that each year they produce two versions one for each of their palates. The common denominator in all of their wine is the high quality grapes purchased from all across the Willamette Valley. The wide variety of growers not only assures high quality materials for the wine, but creates individual flavors unique to each vineyard.

The Boedecker Cellar features several different types of Pinot noir all of which have been aged for at least a year and a half to ensure quality of flavor. The 2006 Pinot noir, available now, breaks down into two categories, the Stewart is a more classical Oregon style with a red fruited, velvety textured blend Wadenswil, Pommard and a bit of Dijon Pinot noir featuring fruit from Anderson Family, Carlton Hill and Cherry Grove Vineyards. While the Athena is a more new world styling , it is dark and spicy blend of Dijon Clone Pinot noir made with grapes from the Shea, Momtazi, and Cherry Grove Vineyards in the Willamette Valley.
Boedecker Cellars is located at 2621 NW 30th Ave., in the industrial area of NW Portland. There are mostly amazing Portland condo’s for sale more then residential homes. Forest Park-Northwest District, in an area that is close to both the hiking trails in Forest Park, as well as the Portland Farmers Market. Amity Vineyards in Yamhill County – Pinot noir greatness
Amity Vineyards, located in Yamhill County in Amity is located just outside the Portland Metropolitan Area in what is widely considered to be one of the premier Pinot noir producing areas in the world. Since it’s inception in 1974 Amity has played a continuing role in establishing the areas reputation and in 2008 its ECO-Pinot noir won a gold medal in the State Fair wine competition; a first for an organic wine.
Founder Myron Redford was one of the first people who realized that Northern Willamette Valley’s maritime climate was the perfect venue to grow cool-climate wine grapes like Pinot Noir. Amity Eco-Wine, a sulfite free organic wine, comes in two varieties; the first, the Pinot Noir Organic has the aroma of both cherry and cranberry with a touch of spic and vanilla. Meanwhile the Pinot Blanc Organic from Stater Vineyards has a delightful pineapple aroma and flavor with some additional citrus as well. #1- The Alameda Brewhouse in Beaumont Village – Northeast Portland
This is post #1 of my 101 cool Portland places.
I have ventured into this brewhouse many Friday and Saturday evenings always experiencing a great selection of beers and good food to accompany. The Alameda Brewhouse, in Northeast Portland, has been brewing up great tasting beer since the beginning of the millennium. All of the beer is produced in house under the watchful eye of head brewer Carston Haney who brews up a wide variety of brews including several seasonal blends. The traditional Northwestern fare is a hearty addition to the suds with everything from hamburgers gingered tahini-soy tiger prawn skewers. With a full belly of food and beer, what else could I want?
The Alameda Brewhouse is located at 4765 NE Fremont St in in Beaumont Village / Wilshire neighborhood. Hours are Sunday through Thursday 11 am until 11 pm and Friday and Saturday 11 am until Midnight. Happy Hour runs Monday through Friday from 3 pm until 6 pm. If you go be sure to check out the vegiburgers that are made with grain from the brewery and the handmade desserts like the Stout Milkshake or the torte served with créme anglase.
Alameda offers up a wide variety of beer for all seasons including the Black Bear Double Stout, which won a Gold Medal at the 2003 Great American Beer Festival. Other excellent choices are the El Torro, a Northwestern IPA made from all organic grain and the Wilshire Wheat Ale an American wheat beer style which boasts a surprising complexity of flavors. The Irvington Juniper Porter is full of chocolate malt and black strap molasses, with just a hint of juniper.
You can view their website at Alameda Brewhouse.
