#11- The Hawthorne strip
Post # 11 of 101 Cool Portland places. The Hawthorne strip.
Yes, Hawthorne Blvd has a special place in my heart…and my belly…and my liver….and my wallet. There is so much to do that on any given day you can spend an entire afternoon walking around and enjoying all that the Hawthorne strip has to offer. I remember seeing What the Bleep do we know at the Baghdad Theater which happen to be filmed at that theater. DeJaVu! Time for me to go into Powell’s book store on Hawthorne, read up on my Salmon fishing and Organic gardening skills then stop into Fresh Pot for a cup ‘o coffee. Don’t spill on that book. Oops, sorry.
There are so many great restaurants ranging from Korean BBQ – Toji, to Mexican to Italian to Japanese- Mio Sushi, and of course good ole Portland home-style cooking. Have you heard of the Bar-muda triangle? Check it out around SE 48th. You will find Bar of the God’s, Space Room and Angelo’s, or maybe Swickley’s to include. A good drink and a game of pool is sure to please. Ouch! those drinks are strong. Time to venture into the Mt. Tabor Theater and see some great live music.
When you are ready for an all day or evening adventure, be sure to check out the Hawthorne district.

#4 – Kelly Butte Nature park
This is #4 of 101 Cool Portland Places, Kelly Butte Park.
I love the hiking trails in Kelly Butte because it has not been “civilized” yet. Unlike Mt. tabor with it’s carved out paths and man-made structures and large quantities of joggers, Kelly Butte is a bit of untouched mountain hiking yet in the middle of the city of Portland.

Forest Park in the NW Portland hills has a similar feel as Kelly Butte, but Forest park is so much larger and epic in proportion. My favorite memory of hiking in Kelly butte is when we had the huge snow storm of 2009, a group of friends and I hiked around Kelly Butte with no civilization in sight. Then we all started to get worried cause the snow was getting deep and we might find our selves in trouble…then we thought, “wait a second, we are still in the middle of the city, the, 109th street is right down this hill, everything is going to be OK”.
As you are driving on the 205 Freeway, you can see Kelly butte to the east as you are inbetween the Division and Powell streets in SE Portland. Kelly butte does have public hiking trails and you can find them on the 103rd ave. in the Cherry Park neighborhood off Division if you go all the way up the hill.
Enjoy the hike,
Kevin
#3 – The Woods has Great Live Portland music
This is Post # 3 of 101 Cool Portland Places.
My new favorite venue to see live music definitely has to be to be The Woods. You feel like you are walking into this old-school building that has a feel of an western/morgue/party club and a hotel lobby from one of those old classic movies. There is a sweet chapel area for performances, as well as several smaller lounges and outdoor seating, including a covered smoking salon.
The Woods faces Milwaukie Avenue in downtown Sellwood, which is served by bus line 70, and is easily accessible from anywhere in Portland.
Some of my favorite Portland local bands have performed at the woods including Run On Sentence, Heroes and Villains and the Brothers Young.
Wine and Beer is served and for bookings live shows you can contact: Caroline Buchalter.
Expect to have a great evening at The Woods. Make it your monthly routine to support live music in Portland, and definitely give The Woods a try. The Woods is located in Sellwood neighborhood at 6637 Milwaukie Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97202.
