The Goodfoot pub and lounge pool hall and live music.

Post # 18 of 101 cool Portland places – The Goodfoot Pub and Lounge.

I love the Goodfoot. It has been a staple of my nightlife activities since I’ve moved to Portland. I have the option of going upstairs and playing a few rounds of pool over a locally made brew and hummus plate while spacing out on great art or going downstairs and catching some groovalicious live music or some funktastic DJ jams.

The upstairs pool hall is always filled with amazing local artists completely covering all of their walls, just that alone makes relaxing in the booths an enjoyable spacecraft to be on. There are around six pool tables and a good selection of food and beer to choose from.
The downstairs, now that it is smoke free is a dark, moody and spacious area that hosts some of Portland’s finest musicians.
You can expect to find some good funk, bluegrass, rock, blues, hippie jams, and a few other focused varieties. I love going on Friday nights where funky DJs spin all night  and I end up dancing ’til my feet are sore or I meet a lovely lady who sweeps me off of them.

For a great evening out with friends or on a first time date which is sure to impress, I definitely recommend The Goodfoot which is located in the Kerns neighborhood at:
2845 SE Stark St.
Portland, OR 97214

Oaks Park Roller Skating and amusement park.

Post # 17 of 101 cool Portland places. Oaks Park Roller Skating and Amusement park.

Ready to be a kid again. Head down to Oaks Park Roller Skating, slap on a rental and skate till your feet are sore.  The last time I was there my friend decided to have a theme party and everyone had to wear a wild or weird hat. So around 30 of us showed up and started skating in these top-hats and cartoon hats, mine was a hat that was upside down and had  a plant inside of it. My brain was making it grow :)

Anyways, the manager made us all get off the rink because they said those hats were a tripping hazard. Spoiler!
There are alot of great rides at the amazement park, more then you would find in your neighbors backyard but less then at Disneyland. It’s a great place for kids and schools, picnics and so many other great activities. Check out their website at Oaks Park.

Oaks Park is located in the Sellwood neighborhood at:

7805  SE Oaks Park way
Portland, OR 97202

Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade in Downtown Portland

Post #16 of 101 cool Portland places – Ground Control Arcade

OK, so this post is going to show a bit of the cool geeky side of me but yes… I enjoy my time at  Ground Kontrol. There are some great classic arcade games there. If you look back deep in your memory, way back when you didn’t have a car and you took a few of quarters from your mom’s purse and hung out at 7-11 playing video games and drinking Slurpee’s, weren’t those the best days?  Was that just me?

Yes, Ground Kontrol has many of those old classic arcade games that you loved playing when you were younger, including pinball machine’s. There are well over 90 of the best arcade games from the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s in an authentic game-room environment. Here is the ground Kontrol arcade index.  They even have live music and DJ’s on certain evenings as well as a bar to get your drink on…Imagine that!

Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade is located in Downtown Portland Oregon at:
511 NW Couch St.

Last Thursday in Alberta Arts – Portland style!

Post # 15 of 101 cool Portland places. Last Thursday in Alberta Arts

The Alberta drag is full of great locally owned shops, restaurants, art galleries, coffee houses, bars, live music and brew pubs that line the main street. What better place to have one of the coolest monthly street fairs on? Welcome to Last Thursday.

Every last Thursday of each month Alberta St. turns into a public art show with booths that line the street from NE 15th to NE 30st. So many local Portland artists come out to display and sell their amazing creativity…whatever it may be. Everything from Pulli Pants by  Jackie Karnes to awesome artwork by Chuck Bloom. You might see some DJ’s on the corner or inside a local venue shaking beats well into the night, maybe even a few fire walkers, food carts with a good burrito or Thai food, street performers on stilts or  M4 throwing down great band-grooves for all to enjoy. In my opinion this street fair has just a tiny touch of a Burning Man-esque feel. Have you been?

A few Alberta St. hot spots are The Tin Shed and Garden Cafe, La Sirenita, Binks, Alberta St. Oyster bar and Grill, Vita Cafe, Alberta st Public house ( great live music), Thia Noon restaurant and of course… Zilla Sake. I’ve Seen HyDrive perform live there a few Thursdays ago.

When it happens to be the last Thursday of the month and you want to experience the wild side of Portland, grab a friend, wear something fun and creative and venture off to Last Thursday located in the Alberta Arts district. You’ll be glad you did.

#14- The Saturday Market on those lazy Portland days.

Post #14 of 101 Cool Portland Places – Portland’s Saturday Market.

Every time I go to the Portland Saturday Market (also on Sundays), I always catch myself in front of the “honey” man, and grabbing a few samples of fresh honey or the “soap” lady with a few small slivers of sample soap. I usually hate shopping for gifts at retail stores, so the PSM is usually my best bet to gather many gifts in one day. It could be that I am lazy or that I prefer locally made.  Both? With over 400 members it is the largest continuously operated outdoor market in the United States. Artisans and craftsmen mix with street preferment’s while the smell of cuisine from 50 different countries drifts through air.

A gyro and salad, or a slice of locally made pizza are my favorites. I grab a seat infront of the live music performance stage and eat while wondering…”why am I not in a live band anymore?” or…”I can play that bass line!”.  Food and music are a huge part of my life. Supporting locally made items are also important in my life.

The idea for the Market came from Sheri Teasdale and Andrea Scharf, two artists who wanted to create a space where artists could display their work and customers could find high quality locally produced items. The Market moved to its current location in 1976 and started opening on Sundays the following year. It generates approximately $8 million yearly in gross sales and attracts around 750,000 visitors.

PSM runs from March 1 through December 24, Saturdays from 10 am to 5pm and Sundays from 11am to 4:30pm. There is no cost to enter but parking can be an issue, however all forms of public transportation run directly past the market. The Portland Saturday Market is located at 108 W Burnside St, in Old Town. For more information check out portlandsaturdaymarket.com.

The Portland Saturday Market is at 108 W Burnside St, in Old Town located in Downtown Portland under the Burnside Bridge. Hope to see you there!

Portland Community Media TV station

Post #13 of 101 cool Portland places - Portland Community Media TV station

Portland Community Media is one of those places that many people know of but don’t know where it is or what it is about. PCM is located at 2766 N.E. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
Portland, Oregon 97212 and it’s Portland’s very own public cable access TV station.

If you have never been inside I would recommend stopping on by and saying hello to the friendly folks, and maybe seeing if there are any classes that interest you to take? PCM allows you take classes and then once you finish the courses you have the right to use all of the camera gear, editing software, lights and mics and even a fully equipped studio with everything you would need to create and broadcast your very own show.

If you have a creative or interesting idea and want to put it on TV, this is a great avenue to start with. I am even a certified producer and have started my own TV project called Portland’s Favorite. There are other cool shows such as Outside the box, Face to Face, Chef Julian and many others. You have probably seen many of these while watching TV on either channels 11, 23 or 29.
