In my personal opinion Alberta Arts and Hawthorne are the two “coolest” neighborhoods in Portland. Alberta in inner Northeast and Hawthorne in inner Southeast.

Rowanberry School teaches the Reggio Emilia approach
The Rowanberry School is located in NE Portland in the Piedmont neighborhood.
According to their website, Rowanberry’s core influences come from the Waldorf kindergarten, (children’s garden) and the progressive early childhood programs of Reggio Emilia, Italy. Waldorf education supports the child with a holding that carries him through his day rhythmically, with story, song and movement. The Reggio approach supports the child’s intellectual and creative development through in-depth interdisciplinary studies, or inquiries.
Rowanberry school
I especially love this school because I am able to see first hand how my 4 year old boy is enjoying this school and the excellent skills he’s getting out of it. This is his second year at Rowanberry and he comes home each day after school with a smile on his face, great stories to tell, new friends to talk about and he’s discovering his personality is a positive way which makes me excited about the teachings of Rowanberry.
Rowanberry School is a mixed-age kindergarten program for children ages 3-6. Children may attend Rowanberry Pre-School from age 3 until first grade ready.

Shanghai Tunnel in Downtown Portland Oregon
If you aren’t familiar with shanghaiing, it refers to the capture and illegal sale of able-bodied men to sea captains in need of crewmen.
In the late 1800s, bares evidence of secretive underground tunnels where people disappeared. Sailors and unwary patrons would visit local saloons and either drink too much or find themselves the victims of Opium knockout drops. The shanghaied men would vanish through the saloons trap doors, be locked in a holding cell, and then put on a ship to crew for several years.

This is how Portland’s underground catacombs received the moniker, Shanghai Tunnels. This infamous practice also involved women, who were sold into white slavery if they became victims of the Deadfalls. You will venture into the “Portland Underground” to see remnants of this shocking maritime history — unique architecture, underground holding cells, a “dead fall” trapdoor, unearthed artifacts of this terrible, misguided labor practice, and more. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the secret haunted history of shanghaiing. Admission is $13 for adults and $8 for children under 12 years old. The tours occur regularly, however you MUST make a reservation – appointment only!! Admission includes tour guide, flashlight (for the underground portion), and a can opener to this underground world. For tour-guide information please check out the Cascade Geographic Society.

Shanghai Tunnel Bar
The Shanghai is in the heart of Portland’s party-town, located mostly underneath Berbati’s Pan with the entrance, upstairs lounge and outdoor seating on the corner. The subterranean portion of the bar is actually part of Portland’s infamous Shanghai Tunnels. The Shanghai can get pretty crazy, which can fulfill that fun downtown party need. Stiff drinks and affordable Pan-Asian and American food is served as well.

Portland Seafood and Wine Festival
Two of the greatest things combined into one event. Seafood and wine, who doesn’t love them both. It’s the Portland Seafood and Wine Festival.
